Abstract:
Environmental pollution is a pressing concern in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, where rapid industrialization, urbanization, and population growth have significantly impacted the region’s natural resources and ecological balance. This study examines the major causes of pollution in Tirunelveli, including industrial emissions, vehicular pollution, water contamination in the Thamirabarani River, and improper waste management. Industrial effluents and untreated sewage have degraded the river’s quality, threatening aquatic life and human health. Vehicular emissions, driven by a surge in population and vehicle numbers, contribute to rising air pollution and greenhouse gas levels. Additionally, inadequate waste management systems exacerbate environmental degradation through open dumps, plastic pollution, and untreated sewage.
